Women's Basketball Avenges Lone Loss with win over Black Hills State

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team was able to avenge their only loss of the season by handing Black Hills State a 65-58 decision on Saturday evening in Brownson Arena. The Mavericks lone loss of the season came on December 11 in Spearfish, S.D., a 60-50 setback.
 
The Mavericks used an 11-0 run early in the second period to break away from the Yellow Jackets. The run was started with 52 second left in the first period after a Kylyn Rigsby three-pointer and ended with 8:15 to play in the second period on a Daniella Turner jumper to make it 23-17.
 
Colorado Mesa took a 37-29 lead into the half and a 54-39 lead into the fourth quarter when the defensive clamps were put on. They limited the Yellow Jackets to just one made field goal and six made free-throws. They were able to force 15 turnovers on the evening and had six blocked shots.
 
Redshirt sophomore Natalie Bartle led all scorers with 15 points on 6-for-15 shooting from the field and 2-for-2 from the line. Bartle entered the game among the nation's leaders in both free-throw attempts and makes.
 
Turner and Rigsby each finished with 12 points while Sophie Anderson went to work on the glass finishing with a season-high 10 rebounds.
 
The Yellow Jackets were led by Racquel Wientjes who finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. She was 6-for-16 from the field with just one made three-pointer.
 
Wientjes entered the game among the RMAC leaders in points per game, averaging over 20 a night. Rigsby and Anderson were assigned to her and held her to her second lowest scoring output of the year. In the first meeting, she scored 28 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
 
The Mavericks are now 7-1 and tied with Western Slope rival Western Colorado for the top spot in the standings while Black Hills State falls to 6-2, one game behind the leaders and tied with Colorado School of Mines.
 
Colorado Mesa heads back out on the road for a pair of games on the Front Range. The Mavericks will play at MSU Denver on Friday followed by a tilt with Colorado Christian on Saturday.
