Freshman Arms Lead Mavericks to Series Sweep

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The No. 3 Colorado Mesa baseball team completed the sweep of the No. 9 Southern New Hampshire Penmen on Sunday with a 10-1 victory at Suplizio Field in a non-conference matchup.

Freshman Jared Ure was phenomenal in his first home start, second start overall. Ure allowed one run on ten hits, walked none and struck out four in six and two-thirds innings of work. He worked a four pitch inning in the third and threw just 78 pitches in the game.

Colorado Mesa (5-1) trotted out a pair of freshman after Ure. Lefty Kannon Handy pitched the next two and two-thirds innings of no-hit baseball. Handy walked two and struck out three using just 32 pitches. Jacob Rhoades retired the final batter of the game.

Offensively, Matt Cassin carried the Mavericks with a 3-for-4 effort including his first home run of the season. Cassin took a pitch to the opposite field, right down the left field line that snuck just inside the foul pole and above the 302 sign. Later, he delivered a RBI double to stretch the Maverick lead to the final 10-1 margin.

Caleb Farmer and Jonathan Gonzalez each had three hits as well. Two of Farmer's three hits went for doubles.

Haydn McGeary hit his third home run of the season in the seventh inning, hammering an 0-2 pitch over the wall in center field.

Junior Spencer Bramwell continued his solid weekend with a two hit performance that included his fifth home run of the season and fourth on the weekend.

Southern New Hampshire's (0-3) Sam Henrie and Jake Coro each had two hits in the game while lefty starter Oluwasayo Kintunde was saddled with the loss.

The Mavericks will continue their home stand beginning on Thursday this week with a single game beginning at 2:30pm against Northwest Nazarene at Suplizio Field.
