Mavs claim 5-2 win in official spring-opener

POCATELLO, Idaho— The Colorado Mesa University women's tennis team won five of the six singles matches to claim a solid 5-2 neutral-court win in their official spring-season opener over NAIA Lewis-Clark State College of Lewiston, Idaho on Saturday afternoon here at Idaho State University's Reed Gym.

Senior Kristen Kirby went 2-0 on the day in the top flight to lead the Mavs, who improved to 5-3 overall in 2019-20.  The Warriors, who had dropped a 7-0 decision to the host Bengals earlier in the morning, are now 0-2.

LCSC won the doubles point in come-from-behind fashion as they took tight No. 2 and 3 matches after Kirby and Laura Alsing were convincing 6-2 winners over Kyla Collier and Laura Diaz in the No. 1 affair.

It was then the Mavericks turn to come from behind as Kirby defeated Begona Andres, 6-2, 6-2 to start the singles rally.  Rebecca Osterberg, Carolena Campos and Maike Waldburger were also straight-set winners as CMU clinched the team win with two matches to spare.

Osterberg was a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Laura Rosselli at No. 3 singles while Campos followed up with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Alexis Maison at No. 4.  Waldburger's 6-2, 6-1 win over Collier was the clincher.

Lauren Thomas also picked up a 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (11-9) No. 6 win over Sophie Uhlenkott for good measure while Alsing forced a third set before going down to Diaz, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

The Mavericks will remain here for a Sunday 9 a.m. battle with Division I Idaho State (1-2).
