Newcomer clinches men's tennis win over Warriors

POCATELLO, Idaho— Christian Albrechtsen, Alain De La Bastide, Steven Howe, Mitchell Steadman and newcomer Jandre van Wyk all posted straight-set singles wins to lead the Colorado Mesa University Maverick men's tennis team to a 5-2 neutral-court win over NAIA No. 25 Lewis-Clark State College on Saturday evening here at Idaho State University's Reed Gymnasium.

The Mavericks are now a solid 4-1 on the season as a whole while the Warriors fell to 0-2 on the campaign after falling 7-0 to the host Bengals earlier in the day.

Van Wyk, a mid-year addition to the program out of Pretoria, South Africa, provided the dual clinching point as he claimed a 6-4, 6-1 win over Vannasak Chheang in the No. 6 singles match.

Meanwhile, Howe went 2-0 on the day as he won 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4 singles over Gunnar Harlan after teaming with freshman Tyler Landen for a 6-4 win over Luca Menezes and Marcus Gavelin in the No. 2 doubles match.

The Warriors had won the other two doubles matches to take the early 1-0 advantage before De La Bastide cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 win over Larry Magalasin in the No. 2 singles match, the first to finish.  Howe then finished off his win to give CMU a 2-1 lead before Albrechtsen won 6-4, 7-5 in a hard-fought top flight encounter.

The Warriors answered back to cut the team deficit to 3-2 with a No. 3 singles win by William Bruchard over Landen, 7-5, 7-5 before van Wyk's win clinched the dual.

Steadman then added a 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 win over Gavelin at No. 5 singles to close out the night after Thiago Nejm also won an exhibition match for the Mavs.

CMU will face the 1-1 Bengals at 12:30 p.m., Sunday.
