GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa Mavericks (3-1-1, 1-0-1) will travel to the Denver area for games against MSU Denver and Colorado Christian University. The game against MSU Denver will be played at the Regency Athletic Complex at 3:30 pm on Friday. On Sunday, the Mavericks will face CCU at the Trailblazer Stadium in Lakewood, Colo. at 2:30 pm.
The Mavericks started the RMAC season 1-0-1. Tying with Fort Lewis and defeating CSU-Pueblo.
A solid line of defenders leads the Mavericks as Chris Boyd, Noah Rosenberg, and goalkeeper Brendan Brown are the only Mavericks who have started each of the five games this season along with midfielder Niall Shaffery. Rosenberg and Brown are the only two Mavs who have played every minute on the field.
On the offensive side freshman Alex Fronapfel leads the team in goals with three and has seen time in each of the Mavericks five games. Six other Mavericks have recorded one goal. Last week Niall Shaffery put his first goal of the season in the net to help the Mavericks defeat CSU-Pueblo.
Goalkeeper of the Week
For the first time in his career senior goalkeeper Brendan Brown earned RMAC Goalkeeper of the Week. He set a career high six saves against CSU-Pueblo to give the Mavericks their first shutout of the season. The game before against Fort Lewis he recorded five saves.
Over those two game Brown recorded a 0.45 goals against average and he's currently at a 0.96 goals against average on the season.
MSU Denver
The Roadrunners (3-3, 1-1) are led by Jerry Gutierrez who has three goals on the season and a 0.833 shots on goal percentage. The Roadrunners began the RMAC season with a 5-0 win over Colorado Christian and a 5-2 loss to Dixie State.
The Mavericks have defeated MSU-Denver the past four consecutive times and allowed zero goals in each of those games.
About CCU
The Cougars are in search of their first win this season they are currently 0-5. They have recorded two goals this weekend both of which were scored by Zach Mercier.
In the net the Cougars have used two goalkeepers, but Max Collingwood has recorded all five starts. Combined the CCU goalkeepers have a 3.40 goals against average while the opponents have a .40 goals against average.
The Mavericks are 19-0-1 all-time against CCU and have shut them out in eight of the last ten meetings. In the last six year the Mavs have recorded more than one goal in each match.
Next Up
The Mavericks will return home the following weekend against Dixie State and Westminster. On Friday October 4th the Mavericks will play Dixie State at 7 pm. On Sunday the Mavs will play Westminster College at 1:30 pm.
