GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team won its sixth straight Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament title with a 13-2 win over the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers on Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field.
The Mavericks got on the board in the first inning after a RBI groundout by
Jordan Stubbings brought in
Hunter Douglas who led off the game with a double down the left field line.
In the second inning, the Mavericks began to break it open after a 3-run home run by
Josh Shapiro that cleared the fence in right field. The home run was Shapiro's third of the season and gave CMU a 4-1 lead at the time.
Colorado Mesa extended their lead to 9-2 after the third inning, highlighted by a RBI double by Shapiro.
Shapiro finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and five runs driven in.
The Mavericks tacked on four more runs in the seventh inning after a RBI double by
Chase Hamilton, a RBI single by Shapiro, and a two-run home run to left field by
Hunter Douglas.
Douglas finished the game 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two runs driven in while Hamilton was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a run driven in.
Spencer Bramwell went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. He was named the tournament MVP after leading the tournament with a .667 batting average.
Senior
AJ Landis earned the win on the mound after firing six innings. Landis (6-3) allowed two runs on six hits, walked three and struck out eight in the outing.
Gage Edwards and
Will Dixon combined on the last three innings and combined to allow just one hit, walked one and struck out three.
Colorado Mesa improved to 45-9 on the season and with the win claimed the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The Mavericks will await the NCAA Selection Show tomorrow evening at 8pm to find out what seed they are heading into the South Central Region Tournament.
