COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa baseball team dropped the final game of the four-game series to the UCCS Mountain Lions 3-2 at Mountain Lion Park on Sunday in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
The Mavericks struck first in the top of the second inning on a RBI double off the bat of
Johnny Carr that scored
Haydn McGeary from second base.
UCCS answered back in the bottom half of the inning for two runs to take the 2-1 lead. That lead would stay that way to the fifth inning when they added an insurance run to make it 3-1.
The insurance run would be needed for the Mountain Lions as
Haydn McGeary hit his fourth home run of the season, a solo shot to left center in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 3-2. That would be all the Mavericks could muster in the defeat.
A pair of freshman made their debuts on the mound for Colorado Mesa.
Isaac Hayen and
Gage Edwards each made their collegiate debut combining for four innings allowing one run on two hits, walked one and struck out three.
The Mavericks fall to 22-4 on the season and 10-2 in the conference while UCCS improves to 14-12, 6-6 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
Colorado Mesa will return to Suplizio Field next weekend when they host Colorado Christian beginning on Friday at 6:05pm.
