ST. GEORGE, Utah – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team committed 28 turnovers in a 56-52 loss to the Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks on the final day of the Dixie State Classic Basketball Tournament in Burns Arena.
The Mavericks had a hard time dealing with the Nighthawks full court pressure and committed a majority of the 28 turnovers in that. Those are the most turnovers the Mavericks have committed since December 12, 2014 in a 76-66 win over Western New Mexico.
The Nighthawks made the Mavericks pay for those turnovers as 25 of their 56 points came off turnovers.
Colorado Mesa fell behind 13-2 with 5:15 to play in the first quarter but did gain their first lead of the game with 2:29 to play in the second quarter on a bucket by
Sierra McNicol to make it 28-26. The Mavericks would lead by as many as nine points with 8:51 to play in the third quarter after a made jumper by
Sophie Anderson.
The Nighthawks took their final lead of the game with just 43 second left in the game.
The Mavericks outrebounded Northwest Nazarene 44-30 and shot better from the floor 39.1-33.9.
Kelsey Siemons continues to play well for Colorado Mesa. She finished with 15 points and a career-high nine rebounds in the game.
McNicol was the only other Maverick in double figures with ten.
Northwest Nazarene's Marina Valles finished with a double-double at 11 points and ten steals.
The Mavericks will be at home for the Thanksgiving weekend for the annual Holiday Inn Airport Thanksgiving Classic. They will open up the slate on Friday at 5pm when they take on the University of the Southwest.
