Mavericks Set to Begin RMAC Play

The Mavericks enter the RMAC with a 2-0-1 record.

The Colorado Mesa men's soccer team will travel to Fort Lewis and CSU-Pueblo this weekend to open up Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. First the Mavericks will travel to Durango, Colo. for a match up against Fort Lewis College on Friday at 3:30 p.m. Following this game the Mavericks will travel east to Pueblo, Colo. for a match against CSU-Pueblo on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Mavericks are now 2-0-1 after this past weekend when they beat Eastern New Mexico in overtime 2-1. Following that game the Mavericks went on to beat Northwest Nazarene 2-1. Chris Boyd netted the goal in overtime to push the Mavericks past the Greyhounds last Thursday night. Kevin Del Mazo finished the weekend with three assists and is now one away from having the most career assists in CMU history. With one more assist he will pass former Maverick Moshe Perez. Currently Del Mazo and Perez are tied at 22 assists each.

After the two wins this weekend the Mavericks moved up in the The United States Soccer Coaches Poll. They are now ranked No. 19 compared to their previous ranking at No. 21. This poll is accurate as of Sept 11 2018.  

About Fort Lewis

The Skyhawks of Fort Lewis are 2-0-1. Their tie comes from a match against Northwest Nazarene who the Mavericks have previously defeated in a match last Saturday. As a team the Skyhawk's shot on goal percentage is 0.444 and they are taking 1.67 shots per game.

The Skyhawks offensive leader is sophomore Ryan Lee. He has recorded two goals on the season. Nicholas Perez and Bar Hazut add to the Skyhawks offense recording a goal and an assist each. Hazut leads in shots taken with 11 shots on the season.

The Skyhawks are coached by head coach David Oberholtzer who is in his second year as head coach for the Skyhawks. Last season the Skyhawks were 10-6-4.

The Mavericks are 7-10-2 all time against the Skyhawks. The two teams first game against each other dates back to 2007. Last season the Mavericks and the Skyhawks met twice. First they tied with the Skyhawks during the RMAC regular season and then later saw each other in the RMAC tournament where the Mavericks won 1-0.

The Mavericks will battle with the Skyhaws on Dirks Field in Durango, Colo. on Sept 14 at 3:30 p.m.

About CSU-Pueblo

The Thunderwolves are currently 3-1 and have scored four goals on the season. West Texas A&M dominated the Thunderwolves scoring three goals to their one goal. The Maverick's previously tied with West Texas A&M in their first season of the game.

The Thunderwolves shooting percentage is .577 and they've taken 26 shots on the season. Four players for the Thunderwolves have each netted a goal. Cesar Zamudio is one of those players and he is the only one on the roster with a goal and an assist. He currently has three points on the season.

The Mavericks lead the all time series 11-4-3 and have won the last six games allowing zero goals. In these six games the Mavericks have outscored the Thunderwolves 17-0.

This game will take place at the Rawlings Soccer Complex in Pueblo, Colo. The match is set to be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday Sept 16.
