Women's Lax Late Game Heroics Fall Short Against Rangers

Regulation wasn't long enough to decide a winner between Colorado Mesa University and No. 11 Regis University (RU) in the second round of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) women's lacrosse tournament on Friday afternoon. CMU was looking for their first program win ever against the Rangers.

A Jessica Cook goal with 25 seconds remaining in regulation tied the game up at 10-10 and forced the game to go into overtime. However, the Mavericks magic fell just short as Jada Bonner scored her game leading sixth goal of the afternoon in overtime to end the Mavericks 2018 season.

Despite losing both games to RU in the regular season pretty handily, the Mavericks were not the same team going into Friday's matchup. After just six minutes of action, CMU found themselves up 2-1 thanks to a Lindsi Peters score. It was then a game of short two goal runs in the first half, with both teams going into the locker room with seven goals. Amanda Geary, Kiley Barber and Olivia Hayden capped off the Mavericks largest goal stretch of three over the course of five minutes in the middle of the half.

In the second half there was more defense than there was offense, with both teams only scoring three times. The Rangers jumped out to a two-goal lead, but the new look Mavericks fought their way back with Geary and Cook goals to knot the game up at 9-9 with 16:58 to play in the second half. Bonner scored her fifth goal of the night with 10:21 left to play, and it looked to be the game winning goal before Cook's late game heroics stepped in.

Statistics wise, both teams were neck and neck in most major categories. The Rangers finished with just five more shots than the Mavericks (30-25) while the Mavericks won 15 of the 23 draw controls. CMU's lone hurting stat on the afternoon was they finished with seven more turnovers than the Rangers (23-16), which led to more opportunities on offense for RU.

Both Cook, and Geary finished with hat tricks and one assist games for the Mavericks. Hayden was right behind with two scores and one assist to her name.

Lula Mitchell was in net as she has been all season long for CMU. She finished the game with eight saves.

The loss ends the Mavericks 2018 season. CMU finished with a 12-4 overall record and a 7-2 conference record on the year.
