Hodgson homers her way to three RMAC records

CMU run-rules 'Runners in RMAC Tourney game

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University senior super-star Brooke Hodgson hit a 3-run first-inning home run and a second-inning grand slam while breaking three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference records in her first two at bats to lead the Mavericks to a 10-2, 5-inning victory over visiting MSU Denver in Game 8 of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Softball Tournament that continued Friday morning here at the CMU Softball Stadium.

The Mavericks, now 45-3 on the year, are now just one of two remaining undefeated teams in the tournament and will square off with the other (Colorado Christian) in the 11th game of the double-elimination affair at 5:30 p.m., Friday.  A win in that game would move the Mavericks into the championship game on Saturday.

The second-seeded Cougars advanced with a 1-0 win over Regis earlier in the morning.

The Mavericks and Cougars split a 4-game RMAC series less than two weeks ago.

On Friday, Hodgson broke the RMAC's single-season runs scored record with her first inning shot down the left field line and then became the RMAC's single-season RBIs and career runs scored record holder with her grand slam no-doubt blast.  Finishing 2-for-3 with a career-high seven RBIs, Hodgson took over the RMAC lead in home runs with 16.  In the process, she surpassed the former RMAC record of 93 single-season RBIs, set by UCCS' Stacey Haney in 2007.

Hodgson, who had already set the RMAC career RBIs record in March, now has a national-leading 95 this season.

When she touched home plate after the grand slam, Hodgson tallied her 231st career run scored, breaking the former mark of 230, set by the Roadrunner's Amber Roundtree in 2010.  The 2-time RMAC Offensive Player of the Year has also scored 75 runs this season, two more than the former RMAC mark of 73, which had been jointly held by CMU's Kelly Adams (2000) and Haney (2007).  CMU lead-off hitter Maggie Manwarren, who went 1-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base, scored on both of Hodgson's home runs and has now scored 73 runs herself.

In Thursday's opening round 3-0 win over Chadron State, Hodgson had broken former teammate Makayla Kovac's record for career total bases.

Although Hodgson stole the show, she was not the only Maverick to shine in a dominant effort that lasted just one hour and nine minutes, just a minute longer than the lightning and rain delay during Thursday's victory.

Junior pitcher Kimbri Herring needed just 74 pitches to pick up her 19th win of the season.  She allowed just four total hits and struck out seven after recording a career-high 13 strikeouts and a 1-hit shutout in Thursday's win over the Eagles.  She retired 11 straight Roadrunners on Friday.

Meanwhile, Bailey Kleespies hit a pinch-hit bases-loaded single in the top of the second just two plays before Hodgson's grand slam made the score 8-0.

The Mavericks then added two more in the bottom of the fourth thanks to a Kaila Jacobi RBI double as pinch-runner Tayah Gerber raced around the bases form first before Kellie Mrofcza singled in Jacobi as the Mavericks reached double figures.

The fourth-seeded Roadrunners (34-22) did score two in the top of the fifth no a Tes Hass homerun but could not avoid becoming the 22nd Maverick opponent to be finished off by the mercy-rule this season.  They will try to bounce back in a 3:15 p.m. elimination game against No. 7 seed Adams State.
