RIVERSIDE, Calif. – It took 13 innings but the fourth-ranked Colorado Mesa baseball team defeated sixth-ranked Cal Baptist 7-5 on Thursday evening at Totman Stadium.
Zach McLeod led off the 13
th inning with a double and three batters later
Hunter Douglas delivered the go-ahead RBI single scoring McLeod.
JJ Carr added an RBI single later in the inning.
Colorado Mesa fell behind 4-1 after three innings of play but clawed their way back into the game.
Catcher
Tyler Sandoval got one back in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI fielder's choice scoring
Keenan Eaton. That made it 4-2 heading to the fifth.
The Lancers added one in the bottom of the fifth inning to make it 5-2.
Colorado Mesa answered back in the top of the sixth with two runs.
Kyle Leahy didn't have his best stuff on the evening but worked 6.1 innings and ended with a no decision. He allowed five runs on nine hits, walked none and struck out six. He did allow three Cal Baptist home runs.
Leahy was on the hook for the decision until Sandoval delivered an RBI single once again to tie the game at 5-5 in the top half of the eighth inning. Sandoval drove in
Nick Borowski who doubled with one out in the inning.
AJ Landis was brilliant in relief of
Taylor Dye who pitched 3.1 innings of shutout relief of Leahy. Landis (2-0) allowed just two hits while striking out seven in 3.1 innings of relief.
The win by Colorado Mesa snapped a five-game win streak by Cal Baptist and improved their record to 7-2 on the season. The Lancers fell to 5-2.
The two teams will continue the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 4pm.
