GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team (5-1, 2-0) defeated University of Colorado Colorado Springs 67-45 Friday night in Brownson Arena. The Mavericks shot a season high 14 3-pointers and shot 42.4% from beyond the arc.
Senior Jaylyn Duran led all scorers with 20 points and Kelsey Siemons finished with a season high 13 points. These two combined for nine of the Mavericks 14 3-pointers and they both shot exactly 50% from 3-point range.
Hot Hands
In the first quarter the Mavericks got out ahead of UCCS while shooting 50% from the 3-point line. Karina Brandon led the Mavericks in the first quarter with seven points and four rebounds in a complete ten minutes. Sydni Brandon added to the Mavericks hot hands by hitting a half-court shot just before the buzzer to put the Mavericks ahead 17-9 at the end of ten minutes. During this quarter the Mavericks held UCCS to just 1-6 shooting from 3-point range and just 2-13 from the field.
The Mavericks maintained the lead throughout the second quarter and continued their hot shots from beyond arc shooting 40.0% and draining four 3-pointers.
After shooting 12% from beyond the arc in the third quarter the Mavericks started the fourth quarter on a 12-0 run by draining four threes. Siemons started it off with back-to-back 3-pointers followed by Duran and Risgsby hitting a 3-pointer each. During this quarter they shot 75.0% from 3-point range and nailed six 3-pointers.
Tomorrow Night
The Mavericks will face Colorado School of Mines at 5:30 pm in Brownson Arena. The Orediggers fell to Western Colorado on Friday night 36-64. They are currently on a two game losing streak and are still searching for their first RMAC win.
After Friday night's RMAC women's basketball games concluded Colorado Mesa is now tied for the best overall record at 5-1. The only other school of Black Hills who suffered their first loss against Westminster. They are tied with five other schools for a perfect 2-0 RMAC record and among those five schools they have the best overall record.
