Good start propels Mavericks past Mustangs 73-48

Jaylyn Duran scored 20 points for her fourth consecutive game with 20 point or more

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Mavericks improved to 3-1 on the season after a 2-0 weekend in the Holiday Inn- Thanksgiving Classic that took place in Brownson Arena. 11 different Mavericks scored in their 73-48 victory over Western New Mexico University.

Sydni Brandon filled the stats sheet with seven points, six rebounds, a career high eight assists, and two steals all in 23 minutes. Jaylyn Duran led all scorers with 20 points as she went 4-5 from beyond the arc and 7-10 from the field in her best shooting game this season.

Game in Review

The Mavericks were the first to score and they remained in the lead the entire 40 minutes of the game. They made nine field goals in the first quarter and five different Mavericks scored to start the game.

Duran scored the first bucket of the game with a 3- pointer and Sydni Brandon followed with a layup to put the Mavericks ahead of the Mustangs 5-0. After Brandon's points Duran scored the next five to extend the lead 10-2 at 4:37 remaining in the first quarter.

Duran went 3-3 from 3-point range in the first quarter to help the Mavericks to a 22-7 lead by the end of ten minutes.

The Mavericks extended their lead to 20 by the end of the second quarter. In this quarter the Mavericks saw the free throw line six times and made five of six free throws. They also hit three 3-pointers to match their three 3-pointers made in the first quarter. They made a total of nine through the game.  By the end of two quarters the Mavericks led 42-22.

The Mavericks saw their largest lead of the game in the third quarter when they led 57-26 at the 4:24 mark. To reach this 31 point lead the Mavericks went on a 9-0 run starting at the 7:17 mark that lasted till 5:07 with points scored from Duran, Brandon, Kelsey Siemons, and Kylyn Rigsby. By the end of the third quarter the Mavericks led 61-31.

Every Maverick saw the court tonight's game for the first time this season. The Maverick's bench outscored the Mustang's bench 26-12.

Freshmen Azlynn Brandenburg checked in for the first time this season and recorded three minutes of action. Fellow freshmen Kelsey Higginson went 1-3 from the field with her first 3-pointer as a Mav and grabbed two rebounds.

Along with Brandenburg, Sariah Wi Nerra also saw the court for the first time tonight. She grabbed two rebounds in just under three minutes.

Next Up

The Mavericks will travel to Gunnison, Colo. for a game against Western State Colorado on Dec 1 at 5pm. The Mountaineers went 2-0 this weekend at the Holiday Inn- Thanksgiving Classic after defeating Western New Mexico and Arizona Christian University.
