After a dominating 2-0 performance in the semifinal match against MSU-Denver the Colorado Mesa Mavericks (12-2-4) have advanced to the semifinal match of the 2018 RMAC Men's Soccer Tournament. The Mavericks will travel to Golden, Colo. for a match up against Westminster College (14-3-1). The Mavericks will take on the Griffins at the Stermole Soccer Stadium on the campus of Colorado School of Mines. The match will take place at 6:30 pm on Friday night.
The other semifinal match will be Colorado School of Mines versus University of Colorado Colorado Springs which will take place at 1:30 on Friday afternoon.
This season the Mavericks have split with Westminster each winning a match on each other's home pitch. The first time these two teams met was on Sept 28 in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Mavericks stomped the Griffins 4-2 in that match. Lawan Abary, Connor Lowdermilk and Kevin Del Mazo each contributed to the four goals. Del Mazo was responsible for two of them.
The next time these two teams met was in Grand Junction on Oct 14 when the Griffins shut out the Mavs 0-2. In this match the Mavericks lost their first game of the season. Â
Since the match in October the Griffins went on a four game winning streak to earn a second place finish in the RMAC regular season. The Mavericks went on to finish their season 2-1-1 and placed third in the RMAC. Their tie comes from Colorado School of Mines and their loss comes from an overtime heartbreaker by Fort Lewis.
NCAA South Central Region Rankings
In this week's NCAA South Central region ranking the Mavericks were ranked 5th. This is the last ranking before the NCAA selection show that will take place on Nov 5. The south central region will take four teams to the NCAA Tournament. Westminster was picked 4th. In front of Westminster was West Texas A&M, Colorado School of Mines, and MSU Texas who came in 1st. Â
Selection for the 2018 NCAA Division II Men's Soccer Championship will be announced at 6:30 pm, Eastern Time on Monday Nov 5 via web stream on NCAA.com.
