GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The Mavericks will return to Walker Field this weekend for matches against University of Colorado Colorado Springs and Regis University. First they will take on the Mountain Lions of UCCS Friday Oct 5 at 5:30 p.m. (Note: game time has changed from 7 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. as of Thursday morning). Following this match the Mavs will battle with Regis University on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Prior to this game the women's soccer team will compete against Western State at noon.
RMAC Standings
The Mavericks are currently in second place in the RMAC standings and are one of two undefeated teams remaining. After the Mavs defeated Westminster last weekend, the Mavs and Colorado School of Mines are the only two undefeated teams. The Mavericks have 16 conference points and the Orediggers have 18 conference points.
In this week's most recent poll for the Unties State Soccer Coaches Association the Mavericks stayed in the No. 11 position.
Del Mazo 's Senior Season
Kevin Del Mazo is having one of his best seasons yet as a Maverick. The senior from Santiago, Chile has now recorded a goal in the last three games. This past weekend Del Mazo netted two goals against Westminster. The forward now has 16 points on the season. In the beginning of the season many of Del Mazo's points came from assists. On Sept 21 he broke the career assist record and now has 24 assist on his career. He currently has six on the 2018 season and is in the top 15 in the country for NCAA Division II. He is averaging .67 assist a game and is tied in the 14th position.
Lawan's National Attention
Lawan Abary has only played in seven games as a Maverick but has netted nine goals. The Junior College product seems to be finding his transition to Division II quite well. He currently is in the Top 5 for goals per game (1.29) and Top 10 for total goals (9).
Within the conference Lawan is second in goals behind John Haist of Colorado School of Mines who has 11.
About UCCS
The Mountain Lions enter Friday's match with a 3-2-1 RMAC record and 4-3-2 overall record. UCCS is currently on a two game winning streak having defeated Adams State and CSU-Pueblo. The Mountain Lions are led by Alex Vanholle who has 15 points on the season.
About Regis
The Mavericks will host Regis University as a part of a double header. This match with take place at 2:30 following the women's game at noon against Western. The Rangers are 4-1-1 in the RMAC. Before playing the Mavs they will travel to Fort Lewis on Friday afternoon. Luca Kother leads the Rangers with points at six on the season. He has netted two goals and recorded two assist.
The Mavericks have won the last seven matches against the Rangers.
