GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Black Hills State led for just 2:57 in the game but it was enough to outlast the Colorado Mesa women's basketball game 56-53 on Friday evening in Brownson Arena in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.
Colorado Mesa led by eight with 5:43 to play after an
Erin Reichle three-pointer to make it 49-41. But, Black Hills State answered with a 10-0 run to take the lead at 51-50 with 1:40 to play. That lead they would not relinquish.
The Mavericks led for over 30 minutes of the game.
Neither team shot over 40 percent for the game as the Yellow Jackets shot 37.3 percent (19-for-51) from the field while the Mavericks shot 36.5 percent (19-for-52). The Mavericks made one more three-pointer than the Yellow Jackets.
Black Hills State owned the glass, outrebounding the Mavericks 44-30 including 19-10 on the offensive end. Although, the Yellow Jackets only had nine second chance points to the Mavericks 16.
Junior
Jaylyn Duran led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field. The Pueblo native pulled down four rebounds and dished out three assists.
Erin Reichle finished with 11 points and
Ma'ata Epenisa had 12 to round out the Mavericks in double figures.
Julia Seamans led Black Hills State with 16 points.
Black Hills State moved a game ahead of the Mavericks in the standings with the win and sit at 16-4 on the season and 10-4 in the RMAC. Colorado Mesa is now 15-5 on the season and 9-5 in the conference.
The Mavericks will host South Dakota Mines on Saturday at 5:30pm.
