Men's Soccer Weekend Features a Top 25 Matchup

St. Edwards Sept. 8:
Battle of the ranks:
Both Colorado Mesa University and St. Edwards University enter the matchup 2-0 on the season, and both teams enter ranked in the top 25 in the nation. CMU comes in with a #16 ranking while SEU enters in the top 10 at #7.
Last season results:
CMU lost the matchup 2-1 on the road last season. A goal by Roy Abergil in the 83rd minute gave the Mavericks a chance, but they were unable to tie it back up in the final 7 minutes. Both teams finished with 8 shots a piece. The game got physical between the two as well, with 24 fouls being called against SEU and 16 against CMU.
Shots shots shots:
Both teams have been aggressive offensively in the early part of this season. Both teams are averaging over 15 shots per game, with CMU averaging 17 and SEU averaging 20.
Taking down conference rivals:
SEU has already gotten a taste of the RMAC last week with matchups against Metro State and Colorado School of Mines. The Hilltoppers beat CSM 3-0, and outshot them 18-7 in the game. Then against MSU the Hilltoppers tallied 22 shots to the Roadrunners 2 to win the game 2-1.
Players to watch:
Midfielder Moshe Perez and forward Dylan Armstrong are players to watch in this one. Perez leads the Mavericks with 3 points (1 goal and 1 assist) and 15 shots on the season. Meanwhile, Armstrong for the HIlltoppers leads his team with 2 goals on 11 shots in their first two games.

St. Mary's Sept. 10:
Yellow cards aplenty:
Colorado Mesa University and St. Mary's have combined for 9 yellow cards in just two games apiece. While no CMU player has more than one, Tommy Fogarty-Cameron has two for the Rattlers.
Physicality:
Look for both teams to be playing physical in this one. To this point in the season, both teams are in double digits in the fouls category. The Rattlers currently sit at 15 while the Mavericks have tallied 22.
Goalie matchup:
Both goalkeepers in this game have a 2-0 record to begin their 2017 campaigns. For St. Mary's, Mauricio Albo has totaled 10 saves over two games and allowed only 4 goals. For the Mavericks it is Briley Guarneri who has started in goal. He already has 2 clean sheets to his name, to go along with 6 saves.
Last Season:
Last season when these two teams met each other, it ended in a 1-1 tie. The Mavericks outshot the Rattlers 22-12 in the game, but a goal in the opening 10 minutes was able to give St. Mary's enough to keep the game tied.
Players to watch:
Defender Slater Elkind and forward Pato Botello Faz are players to watch in this one. Elkind is second on the Mavericks in points with 2, following his game winning header on Sunday against Newman University. Botello Faz currently leads the Rattlers in points (5), goals (2) and assists (1).
