Mavericks Sweep Doubleheader

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa scored 30 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Colorado Christian on Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

In the day's first game, No. 24 Colorado Mesa scored in five of the six innings they batted in during a 14-1 win. The Mavericks finished with 16 hits including seven extra base-hits.

JJ Carr finished the game 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and three runs driven in. Carr drove in two with a single to center in the bottom half of the third inning.

Redshirt sophomore Bligh Madris was just a homerun short of the cycle, finishing 3-for-3 with a double, a triple, two runs scored and a run driven in. Madris led off the fourth inning with his first triple of the season, a shot into the gap in right center.

Sophomore righty JR McDermott earned the win but had an interesting stat for the first time in his career. McDermott (2-0) allowed one run on eight hits but didn't strike anyone out, the first time that happened in his 13 career starts.

In the night cap, the Mavericks scored six runs in the bottom of the second and the bottom of the sixth inning in a 16-2 win.

Andrew Contreras paced Colorado Mesa at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance. Contreras finished with a double and a two-run single that capped the six run second inning.

Carr and Tyler Sandoval each finished with two hits.

Lefty Chris Ramirez earned the win after pitching five innings of work. He allowed two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out eight. He didn't allow a hit until the top of the fifth inning.

The wins extend the Mavericks win streak to five and they improved to 10-5 on the season and 3-0 in the RMAC. The Cougars fall to 6-11 overall, 0-3 in the conference.

Colorado Mesa will look for the series sweep tomorrow at noon in the series finale at Suplizio Field.
