Orediggers Prevail in RMAC Championship

It was a matchup between the numbers 9 and 19 teams in the country for the RMAC Tournament Championship. Colorado Mesa University versus Colorado School of Mines. When the dust cleared, it was the Orediggers who emerged victorious on Sunday afternoon, pulling away late in the second half to defeat the Mavericks 2-1.

The Mavericks were the first to strike just before the half. Benji Delgadillo fired a shot from 30 yards out into the upper 90 of the goal to give CMU the 1-0 lead entering halftime.

The second half was a much different story for the Mavericks. It started in the 56th minute off of a Nikolaus Grotz corner kick that was headed in past Briley Guarneri by Trevor Amann for the tying goal. Then in the 78th minute the Mavericks were hit with two blows. A foul was called against the Mavericks on John Haist after Haist broke free to the net. The foul came from inside the goal box, which gave Haist a penalty kick opportunity. However, the play also gave the Mavericks a red card for the team. That sent the Mavericks down to 11 men for the remaining 12 minutes of regulation. Haist was able to score his 22nd goal of the season off of the penalty kick to give CSM the 2-1 advantage.

The Mavericks attempted to make a comeback late in the game, but to no avail as CSM would hold their one goal lead to the final buzzer.

CMU finished with three more shots on goal than CSM (12-9) as well as one more shot on goal for the game (6-5).

Guarneri finished with two goals allowed and three saves for the Mavericks.

With the loss the Mavericks will now wait to see if they made the cut for the national tournament that will be taking place this upcoming week.
