OGDEN, Utah – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team closed out the exhibition week with a 79-62 loss to Division I Weber State on Saturday (Nov. 4) afternoon.
Jaylyn Duran and
Ma'ata Epenisa split the team-high scoring honors with 10 points apiece. Duran was 3-for-9 from the field and 2-for-6 from beyond the arc while Epenisa was 4-for-9 from the field.
Unlike the exhibition on Thursday night with BYU, size wasn't a major factor as the Mavericks had more points in the paint 28-26 and were only slightly outrebounded 37-34.
Colorado Mesa played without starting point guard
Erin Reichle who had 27 points against BYU. Freshman
Katrina Chandler started in her place and finished with seven points, two assists and two rebounds in 22 minutes of action.
The Mavericks went cold from the field late in the second quarter and had a stretch where they missed 11 straight field goal attempts until a layin by
Daniella Turner with 49 second to play stopped the streak.
Colorado Mesa finished shooting 35.1 percent from the field, 26.7 from beyond the three-point line, and 72 percent from the free-throw line.
Weber State's Larryn Brooks finished with a game-high 27 points while teammate Briana Gray had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
Colorado Mesa will open the regular season next weekend in Texas as they will take on Midwestern State on Friday (Nov. 10) in the Ashcroft Classic.
