GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team shot a season-high 55.9 percent from the floor in an 83-52 win over Westminster in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action in Brownson Arena.
Colorado Mesa opened the game on a 19-2 run that concluded with 3:08 to play in the first quarter. The run was highlighted by five three-pointers, two off the hand of junior
Kelli Van Tassel.
Van Tassel finished with a career-high 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field. All her shots came behind the three-point arc.
The Mavericks went into the halftime break with a 46-27 lead. They shot over 64 percent (9-of-14) from three in the first half.
Erin Reichle led all scorers with 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 from beyond the three-point arc in 25 minutes of action. Reichle and Van Tassel were the only starters that saw action in the fourth quarter.
Colorado Mesa led by as many as 42 points with 4:41 left to play at 83-41. They also led for all but 19 seconds in the game.
Karina Brandon was the final Maverick to finish in double-digit scoring, finishing with 13 points.
Ma'ata Epenisa finished with a game-high six rebounds.
Westminster's Sicilee Williams was the high scorer for the Griffins with 12 points.
The 52 points scored by the Mavericks did snap a streak of six straight games they had held their opponents to under 50 points. The Griffins shot 33 percent from the field but made just four three-point baskets in the contest.
Colorado Mesa moves to 8-0 on the season and 2-0 in RMAC play while Westminster falls to 1-4 and 0-1 in conference play.
The win for the Mavericks sets up a showdown next Friday in Durango. Colorado Mesa will take on No. 11 Fort Lewis at 5:30pm on December 8.
