WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Colorado Mesa women's basketball team completed the weekend sweep to start the season with a 58-49 win over Cameron in the Ashbrook Classic hosted by Midwestern State in Ligon Coliseum.
The Mavericks used a stout defense all game long, limiting the Aggies to 33 percent shooting from the field and forced 17 turnovers which led to 15 points.
Colorado Mesa shut out Cameron in the final 5:27 of the game. The Aggies were 0-for-7 from the field in that stretch and finished 1-for-10 for the final 6:50 of the game. The Mavericks did not allow Cameron to shoot a free-throw in the fourth quarter.
The Mavericks were not a ton better but they shot 37 percent (23-of-62) from the field and were perfect from the free-throw line going 5-for-5.
Only six Mavericks scored in the game but three of them finished in double figures.
Jaylyn Duran finished the game with 17 points, five rebounds and handed out three assists. The Pueblo native garnered Ashbrook Classic MVP honors as she averaged 19 points for the tournament.
Senior
Erin Reichle had a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season. Reichle was 7-for-16 from the field and connected on five three-pointers.
Ma'ata Epenisa was the final Maverick in double digits as she had 12 points and hauled in seven rebounds. Epenisa was named to the Ashbrook Classic All-Tournament team.
The Mavericks outrebounded the Aggies 46-32 and owned a 14-4 edge in second chance points.
Colorado Mesa will head out to St. George next weekend for the Dixie State Classic where they will take on the host Dixie State and Montana State – Northern.
