Mavericks and Orediggers Split Doubleheader

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Fifth-ranked Colorado Mesa and Colorado Mines split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Suplizio Field.
 
In the day's opener, Colorado Mines scored one in the top of the 11th inning in a 2-1 win over Colorado Mesa.
 
The Mavericks got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI single by John Ballard that scored Greg Reynolds. Reynolds finished the game 2-for-4.
 
Colorado Mines answered back in the top of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Connor Lambert to tie the score at 1-1.
 
It would remain that way until the 11th inning when pinch hitter Joe Popp delivered the go-ahead RBI single.
 
The Mavericks left 13 runners on base and couldn't capitalize with runners in scoring position.
 
Matt Allen got the start for the Mavericks and pitched well enough to win. Allen went six and two-thirds and allowed one run on six hits, walked one and struck out five for the no decision.
 
The loss snapped the Mavericks 11-game winning streak.
 
In the nightcap, James Young III single in the bottom of the seventh scored Lane LaCrone for the winning run in a 2-1 win for Colorado Mesa.
 
The Mavericks were shutout for the first six inning of the game garnering just three hits until the seventh inning.
 
Garrett Ball led off the seventh with a double to the left center field gap followed an infield single by Lane LaCrone.
 
 PJ Gonzalez tied the game with a sac fly to deep right field that led to Young's heroics.
 
Junior Kyle Serrano finished the game with two hits.
 
Tanner Herdt pitched the complete game and picked up the win to move to 4-0. Herdt allowed one unearned run on six hits and struck out seven.
 
The Mavericks and Orediggers will complete the series tomorrow with a single nine inning game at 12pm at Suplizio Field.
