AZTEC, N.M. – The Colorado Mesa University softball team swept both games of a doubleheader against Fort Lewis Saturday (Feb. 20). The Mavs won game one 12-0 and game two 8-4.
The Mavs scored 12 runs on 12 hits and two Skyhawk errors in the first game.
CMU notched three runs in the second inning thanks to three walks and doubles from
Kaila Jacobi,
Courtney Robbins and
Alexandria Dufour.
Mesa extended its lead with nine runs in the fifth.
Sara Phillis led off the inning with a fly out to center.
Kaila Jacobi walked but
Tiyera Hall, who was pitch running for Jacobi, was thrown out after trying to steal second.
With two outs,
Kellie Mrofcza walked and
Nicole Robinson hit a double. The duo would come around to score on a single by
Courtney Robbins. CMU loaded the bases with a single by
Alexandria Dufour and a walk by
Makayla Kovac.
Brooke Hodgson drove in two runs with a double to center field.
After a Fort Lewis pitching change,
Zoe Pakes singled to drive in two runs.
Kaila Jacobi concluded the inning with a three-run homer to left field to cap the scoring in the inning.
McKenzie Surface earned her first career shutout for the Mavericks allowing five hits, striking out six and walking three.
Four players recorded multiple hits for CMU.
The offensive production continued in game two for Mesa who scored eight runs on 14 hits.
The Mavs scored one run in the first, and
Makayla Kovac led off the third inning with a homerun down the left field line.
The CMU lead grew to 4-0 in the top of the fifth compliments of two runs on three hits.
The Skyhawks got on the board with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth.
Mesa added two more runs in the sixth on a single down the right field line by
Makayla Kovac.
FLC manufactured two runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth.
Zoe Pakes led off the seventh with a double and would come around and score on a homerun to center field by Sara Phillis.
Makayla Kovac went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs. Sara Phillis was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.
Rochelle Talamantes earned her first win of the season allowing zero runs on five hits in 3.1 innings of work.
Brooke Hodgson earned the save after giving up four runs, two earned, on seven hits.
Colorado Mesa and Fort Lewis will close out the season series with a doubleheader Sunday (Feb. 21).Â
