The Mavericks cut the Cougar lead to 12 at 72-60 with 3:09 to play but that was as close as they could get it after the initial BYU surge. The Cougars grew their lead to as many as 23 points at the 1:10 mark of the third period.
BYU took advantage of the size discrepancy, scoring 42 points in the paint and outrebounding Colorado Mesa 47-30 leading to 18 second chance points.
Colorado Mesa went ice cold from behind the arc, hitting just 4-of-25 on their three-point attempts.
Ma'ata Epenisa was the only other Maverick in double-digits with 10 points and added a team-high six rebounds.
Colorado Mesa will open the season on Friday with a game against Dixie State at 5pm in Burns Arena.
