GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The rain could not eliminate Colorado Mesa on Friday as they came from behind to defeat the St. Edward's Hilltoppers 8-6 in ten innings in an elimination game in the NCAA South Central Regional at Suplizio Field.
 
Colorado Mesa had to crawl back in the game after giving up one run in the fifth and four in the sixth.
 
After playing eight plus innings, the rains came and forced a two hour and seven minute delay with the Mavericks leading 6-5 with one out and a 1-2 count.
 
The Hilltoppers knotted the game at 6-6 following the delay on a pinch-hit RBI single by Steven Robertson.
 
In the top of the tenth inning, the Mavericks scratched across the go-ahead run on a wild pitch followed by a James Young III solo blast to center field. It was his third home run of the season.
 
Matt Allen pitched a scoreless bottom half of the inning and picked up his second save of the season.
 
Joey Capistran earned the win in relief, moving his record to 7-0 on the season.
 
Austin Wallingford finished the game 3-for-5 with a pair of runs driven in. He hit his third triple of the season in the top of the fifth inning.
 
PJ Gonzalez finished 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and a run driven in. His double in the top of the ninth gave the Mavericks their first lead of the game.
 
Colorado Mesa will have to await the completion of the other games to determine who they play. Check back to cmumavericks.com for game times.
