Ehlers Twirls Gem Against #8 CSU-Pueblo

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa outlasted the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves 2-1 in a battle of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference heavyweights on Thursday evening at Suplizio Field. The two teams entered the series ranked No. 1 and No. 8 respectively in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper national poll.

Tyler Ehlers took the mound for Colorado Mesa in the series opener and earned his fourth win of the season. Ehlers allowed one run (unearned) on three hits, walked two and struck out three.

Ehlers retired the first six batters of the game and didn't allow a runner to reach third base until the eighth inning. He limited the RMAC's top hitting team to just a pair of singles and a double.

Colorado Mesa scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a RBI fielder's choice by Kevin Mitchell. The ThunderWolves tried to throw out Austin Wallingford who scored from third on the play.

The Mavericks tacked on their second run of the game just an inning later. Kyle Serrano scored from first on a Bligh Madris double that burnt the center fielder.

Joey Capistran pitched the ninth to earn his second save of the season. He allowed just one walk while striking out one.

Colorado Mesa improves to 28-3 on the season and 20-1 in the RMAC while CSU-Pueblo drops to 25-4 and 17-2 in conference play.

The Mavericks and ThunderWolves will continue their series tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader starting at 3:00pm.
