Men's Soccer Heads To Texas For NCAA Tourney

Complete Match Notes vs. Midwestern State

LAST WEEKEND
Colorado Mesa fell in the RMAC Tournament Championship match to No. 8 Colorado Mines 2-1 on Sunday. Roy Abergil scored his fourth goal of the tournament for the Mavericks in the match. In the semifinals, the Mavericks defeated CSU-Pueblo behind a Roy Abergil hat trick in the first half. 

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
The Mavericks had four players named to the all-tournament team. Roy Abergil scored four goals in two matches in the tournament while Blake Carlson and Briley Guarneri anchored the CMU defense. Freshman Moshe Perez added a goal and an assist in the semifinal match.

FIRSTS
The loss to Colorado Mines was the first time the Mavericks have scored first in the match and wound up losing. It is also the first time they have failed to hold the lead after leading at halftime.

MIDWESTERN STATE
The Mustangs are led by Albert Rodriguez who scored 16 goals and assisted on seven others during the season. Flavio Guzman is the other scoring threat with eight goals and four assists. Midwestern State played three goalkeepers this year. Noah Fazekas played in nine matches and had a 0.77 GAA with two shutouts.

NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY
This marks the second time in program history that the Mavericks will play in the NCAA Tournament. They defeated Midwestern State in the region semifinals last year 1-0 at Walker Field.

GOALKEEPING 
Freshman Briley Guarneri is among the nation's best goalies. He ranks third in the nation in save percentage at .875 and is ninth in goals against average at 0.57. He already ranks second all-time at Colorado Mesa in shutouts with 11 this season.

NCAA REGIONAL TOURNAMENT
In the other NCAA South Central Region semifinal, eighth ranked Colorado Mines will play host to third-seeded and No. 13 St. Edward's in Golden. The Mavericks have played the three other teams in the regional and are 0-2-1 against them.

COACHING
Todd Padgett is in his second season coaching the Mavericks. He had an extermely successful first season, finishing 18-4-1 and leading the Mavericks all the way to the NCAA National Semifinals in Louisville, Ky. 

The Mavericks will have four assistants helping them out this season with Stan Schrock returning as the top assistant. Schrock was an Academic All-American and All-Region defender a year ago.

2014 NCAA NATIONAL SEMIFINALISTS
The Mavericks had their second straight season of firsts. In 2013, they won the RMAC Tournament for the first time in program history. They followed that up with their first NCAA Tournament appearance, NCAA Tournament win, and South Central Region title.

RMAC PRESEASON POLL
Colorado Mesa was picked to finish fifth in the preseason coaches poll but received four first place votes. Roy Abergil and Blake Carlson were selected to the preseason All-RMAC team with Carlson earning preseason defensive player of the year.

MAVERICKS ON AIR
KMSA 91.3FM, Colorado Mesa's student ran radio station, will be providing broadcasts this season for select home games. Check out the men's soccer schedule page online to find out those select games. 

NEXT UP
If Colorado Mesa wins on Sunday, they would travel to the highest remaining seed in the region and play next week for a chance to win the region championship. If they should lose their season would end.
