EARLY SCHEDULEThe Mavericks opened the season with a pair of duals and four tournaments. Colorado Mesa picked up wins over Embry Riddle and Sierra College at the Maverick Duals before the tournament season heated up. They competed in the DoubleTree Open, Northern Colorado Open, UNK Holiday Inn Open, and Reno Tournament of Champions. The Mavericks fared well in every tournament while facing tough competition at each including some of the top Div. I programs at the Reno Tournament of Champions.
NOT FULL STRENGTHColorado Mesa hasnt been able to put their whole team in a tournament yet this season. Jesse Hoffschneider and
Paco Retana each missed action early in the season with injuries with their first competition coming at the Reno TOC. Everyone is back to full strength and are scheduled to compete in this week's duals.
NATIONAL RANKINGSColorado Mesa is ranked No. 20 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association rankings released last week. The Mavericks will take on
NCAA West Region/RMAC foe San Francisco State on Thursday and No. 15 Cal Baptist on Friday in Brownson Arena.
James Martinez is ranked No. 3 at 157 pounds.Â
LOOKING FOR MORESenior
James Martinez is on a path to become Colorado Mesa's first three-time All-American and only needs three more victories to reach 100 for his career. Martinez picked up championships at the DoubleTree Open, Northern Colorado Open and the UNK Holiday Inn Open. His only losses on the season have come to Div. I wrestlers at the Reno TOC where he snapped a 14 match winning streak.
FIRST TIMERRedshirt Freshman
Randy Boerner has earned some early success in his first season as a starter for Colorado Mesa. Boerner has a 20-7 record with nine pins and 16 of his wins coming for bonus points (major decision, tech fall or pin). He will compete in his first varsity duals this weekend.
SCOUTING THE GATORSSan Francisco State is 2-0 in duals this season including a win over Div. I Cal Poly and nationally ranked NAIA school Simpson. Andrew Reggi is ranked sixth in NCAA Div. II at 197 pounds by the NWCA. Reggi is 10-4 on the season and captured the championship at the Menlo Invitational. Six total starters have winning records on the season for the Gators.
SCOUTING THE LANCERSThe Lancers are 4-1 in duals on the season with their lone loss coming to Stanford in the opening match of the season. That match set an NCAA record as being the largest crowd for an outdoor wrestling dual as it was held in a quad on Cal Baptist's campus and featured well over 2,500 people. Cal Baptist returns national qualifier Alex Annunciation at 141 pounds. Annunciation has a 4-4 record so far this season.
UP NEXTThey Mavericks will travel to Nebraska for a dual with Chadron State on Thursday before heading over to Kearney for the Midwest Duals on Saturday. They will face Dakota Wesleyan, Nebraska-Kearney, Southwest Minnesota and Northern State in the duals.
