Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado – Colorado Mesa men's soccer opened up the season in grand fashion as they took down the St. Edward's Hilltoppers 2-0 on Friday night at Walker Field in a NCAA South Central Regional matchup.
The two teams played to a nil-nil first half with each team attempting two shots.
Redshirt sophomore
Roy Abergil broke the tie with a goal in the 51
st minute of the match. Abergil was fouled just outside the box and received a free kick which he knocked in left side. It was his first goal of his collegiate career.
"I just noticed on film that he gave up goals on the left side and the way the wall was setup, I just decided I was going there," Abergil said about the goal.
Colorado Mesa picked up some insurance in the 75
th minute when
Alan Hernandez took a pass from
Nestor Escobar and scored from the far post. The goal was Hernandez' first of the season and moved him into a third place tie in the all-time record book for goals scored.
Senior goalkeeper
Micah Conrads kept a clean sheet tonight making three saves while facing nine shots.
The Mavericks will take on the Midwestern State Mustangs on Sunday afternoon at 12:00pm. The Mustangs come into the contest ranked 12
th in the NSCAA national poll.
