GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa men's soccer posted a 2-1, come from behind victory over the Adams State Grizzlies on Sunday afternoon at Walker Field.
"A win like this is huge. Adams is an improved and very well-coached, hardworking team and for us to battle back, that's something we haven't done in a long time," Coach Josh Pittman said about his team's effort on Sunday.
The Grizzlies got on the board midway through the first half when Matt Anderson deflected a ball past goalkeeper
Micah Conrads. The goal came on a free kick by JJ Dennis that Anderson deflected past the Maverick defense to give Adams the 1-0 lead.
Legofi Crawford knotted the match at 1-1 just a little over twelve minutes later. Crawford showed some fancy footwork in beating two defenders and finding the left side of the goal. The goal was Crawford's second of the season and the weekend.
At the start of the second half,
Stevie Palma wasted no time netting the golden goal for the Mavericks.
Oliver Querin and
Patrick LaPorta had a nice combination piece down the near sideline and crossed the ball into Palma who headed it home for his first goal of the season.
The win extended the Mavericks record against Adams State to 6-0-2 all-time and 3-0-2 at Walker Field.
"This was the toughest match we have had all year and that includes a match against the sixth ranked team in the country. They are tough," Pittman said about the Grizzlies.
The Mavericks will embark on a four-match road trip to the Front Range. They will take on the Metro State Roadrunners on Friday at Auraria Field starting at 3:30pm.
