GOLDEN, Colo. – The 17
th ranked Colorado School of Mines Orediggers scored the lone goal of the match just 53 seconds before halftime in a 1-0 win over Colorado Mesa in the RMAC opening soccer match for both schools.
Colorado Mines All-American Tesho Akindele's header in the 45
th minute was the only score of the match. Akindele headed in a cross from Jared Herselman for his fourth goal of the season.
The Orediggers outshot the Mavericks in the match 15-5 but Colorado Mesa took a flurry of shots at the end of the match but all were saved.
Tim Hofer and
Marco Escobar each had good looks at the goal in the final minutes of the match but couldn't find the back of the goal.
The match was physical for both teams, as a combined 32 fouls were called and the referee handed out a total of six yellow cards.
Maverick goalkeeper
Brandyn Bumpas made three saves in goal but faced a total of 15 shots in the match.
The Mavericks will return home for a match Sunday with the Mountain Lions of UC-Colorado Springs at 3:00pm from Walker Field.
