GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – With just over three minutes left in the match, Fort Hays State's Michael Cole broke the hearts of the Mavericks when he found the back of the net in a 1-0 double overtime loss for Colorado Mesa. Cole took a deflected clear attempt from the Mavericks and was able to sneak it inside the near post for the game-winner.
"They are a very good team and it was a good battle. It came down to one mistake and it went against us in the back and they capitalized," Maverick coach Josh Pittman said about the game.
Colorado Mesa outshot the Tigers in the match 13-7 but couldn't capitalize on a couple opportunities in the second half. Five of the Mavericks shots were on goal.
"We are playing one of the strongest teams in the country and we are right there. It is just a matter of how the game works sometimes," Pittman added.
Goalkeeper
Brandyn Bumpas took the tough luck loss between the pipes. Bumpas made two saves in the match.
Pittman said, "We need a short term memory, but need to remember this feeling so we never have it happen again," in regards to moving forward from the loss.
Colorado Mesa will have the opportunity to shake the loss off on Sunday when they take on the South Dakota Mines Hardrockers at noon from Walker Field
