Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The top two teams in the RMAC, heading into the regular season finale, met at Walker Field on Sunday afternoon. The Regis Rangers tallied two first half goals, while Colorado Mesa could only counter with one in a 2-1 Ranger win.
Regis scored the first goal of the match in the 15
th minute. Ranger Mark Kelly tallied his 13
th goal of the season when headed in a corner kick by Ben Fredrickson.
Colorado Mesa countered with a goal of their own when
Kevin Escobar found his twin brother Nestor who fired a shot and scored over the head of the Ranger goalie. The goal knotted the match at 1-1.
The Rangers scored the deciding goal in the 38
th minute of the match off a free kick from a ways out. There appeared to be a mis-communication between goalie
Brandyn Bumpas and the rest of the Maverick defense.
Bumpas made five saves in the match, including a huge one in the second half where he dove to his left to stop a sure Ranger goal.
The Mavericks outshot the Rangers in the match 14-8 including 9-1 in the second half.
The loss means the Mavericks are the #3 seed heading into the RMAC Tournament and will host UC-Colorado Springs on Wednesday at Walker Field starting at 6:00pm.
"We need to have all facets of the game going. Offense, defense, goalkeeping, everything needs to be on point," Colorado Mesa coach Josh Pittman said about making a long sustained run through the playoffs.
In the other RMAC Tournament matchup on Wednesday, Metro State will play host to Fort Lewis in Denver. Colorado Mines and regular season champion Regis will receive first round byes.
