14th Ranked Mavericks Go 2-1 at GCU Duals



The Colorado Mesa University Wrestling team came off the winter break this past weekend and wrestled in the Grand Canyon University Duals down in 'warm' Phoenix, Ariz. CMU took on two opponents from the Northern Sun Conference and new regional opponent Simon Fraser from Canada.

The Mavericks came into the dual ranked 14th in the newest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) poll. Grand Canyon and Adams State were the only two other schools in the poll at 6th and 16th respectively.

#14 Colorado Mesa 45, Minot State 3 (Results)
The Mavericks won nine of the ten contested matches including four by pin and two by forfeit. Drew Schumann (141), Justin Schumacher (149), Jordan Passehl (197) and Paco Retana (285) all picked up pins in the win.

Jordan Passehl wrestled in his first matches of the season. Passehl was nursing an injury in the early part of the season but came back and pinned Minot State's Devon Flores in his first match back.

#4 St. Cloud State 32, #14 Colorado Mesa 3 (Results)
Colorado Mesa took on national power and 4th ranked St. Cloud State Huskies in their second matches of the day. The Huskies flexed their muscles winning nine of the ten matches contested.

Tyler Nelson, Nick Petersen, and Paco Retana all took on wrestlers who were ranked #2 in the country by the NWCA. Nelson fell to 2012 NCAA National Runner Up Andy Pokorny 6-0 while Retana also fell to a 2012 NCAA National Runner up in Jacob Kahnke 10-2. Petersen dropped a 3-2 decision to Shamus O'Grady a fellow 2012 All-American.

#14 Colorado Mesa 42, Simon Fraser 3 (Results)
CMU won the first nine matches of the dual on their way to a 42-3 to NCAA Division II newcomer Simon Fraser. Tyler Nelson and Drew Schumann picked up falls in the win.

With the win, Schumann was the lone Maverick to go 3-0 on the day. Schumann is now 11-4 on the season and 6-1 in dual contests.

Utah Valley Open (Results)
A small group of Maverick wrestlers competed in the Utah Valley University Open in Orem, Utah on Saturday. Garrett Stowall was the lone Maverick placer and finished second at 184 pounds. Stowall fell to Wyoming's Ben Stroh in the Championship match.

Colorado Mesa will return to the mats on Thursday with a dual against Cal Baptist at 7:00pm in Brownson Arena.
