The Colorado Mesa University Men's Soccer team took on the Colorado Christian Cougars on Friday afternoon in Lakewood. The Mavericks would prove to have a record setting afternoon in a 7-0 victory over the Cougars that included six second half goals. The win sends the Mavericks record to 5-2-1 on the season and 3-1 in RMAC matches while the Cougars fall to 1-8 and 0-5 in the RMAC.
The Mavericks broke three team records in the win this afternoon. The seven goals, six assists, and the 20 points are all new records with the previous marks set in a 5-1 win over Adams State last season.
Junior
Brandon Burton might have had the best afternoon for the Mavericks. Burton scored two goals, one of which will be credited as the game-winner. Burton's first goal came in the 38th minute of the match and gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead at the time. Burton's second goal came in the 84th minute and gave CMU a 6-0 lead at the time. He also assisted on a goal by
Patrick Wall in the 78th minute. The goal was Wall's first of his Maverick career.
Freshman
Nestor Escobar added to his assist total on the year, picking up two more. Escobar has a team leading five assists on the season and is tied for the team lead in points with nine. One of his assists today was on a goal by older brother Marco.
Stevie Palma,
Alan Hernandez, and
Patrick LaPorta also had goals for Colorado Mesa.
Micah Conrads and
Caleb Ealey kept a clean slate for the Mavericks facing only two shots in the match.
The Mavericks will have a match with RMAC leader and 5th ranked Regis on Sunday in Denver. The Mavericks are currently tied for second place, trailing the Rangers by six points.
