Mavs Lose to #7 Grand Canyon, Beat #19 Fort Hays

            The Mesa State Wrestling team wrestled a double dual tonight at Brownson Arena. The Mavericks faced ranked opponents in #7 Grand Canyon and #19 Fort Hays State. The Mavericks lost to Grand Canyon 30-6 but came back and beat the Tigers of Fort Hays State 27-12.

            Against Grand Canyon, Mesa State could only garner two wins. Sophomore Trevor Donarski (Powell, Wyo.) picked up his 10th win of the season and first since coming back from an injury that forced him to sit out the whole month of January. Donarski beat 'Lope Austen Moore 4-3 at 149 pounds.

            Mesa State's other win came from Sophomore Jon Gappmaier (Salt Lake City, Utah) at 157 pounds. Gappmaier beat 8th ranked Ted Bristol 7-5 of Grand Canyon.

            In the Fort Hays Dual, Mesa State won six of the ten duals and put the dual out of reach when they scored three consecutive wins by fall and went on to win 27-12. The dual started at 141 pounds and the Mavericks started the dual off losing the first two matches and dug themselves a 6-0 hole. 

            Mesa State went on to win the next three duals to climb back and take the lead 9-6. Sophomore Jon Gappmaier, Redshirt Freshman Dylan Granard (Woodinville, Wash.) and Freshman Zak Slotten (Twin Falls, Idaho) all picked up decision wins.

            After falling in the 184 pound matchup, the Mavericks won the next three matches all by fall. Senior Shane Miller (Gardnersville, Nev.), Junior Trevor Stapp (Tempe, Ariz.), and Freshman Daniel Romero (San Diego, Calif.) all won be pin and stretched the Maverick lead to 27-9.

            The Mavericks fell by decision at 133 pounds but won the dual 27-12.

            Mesa State record now sits 7-8 and 4-5 in the RMAC.

            Mesa State will close out its dual season tomorrow night against nationally ranked Nebraska-Kearney. Tomorrow nights match will also be Faculty Appreciation Night,
