Mavericks Compete at Grand Canyon Duals

        The Colorado Mesa University Wrestling team participated in the Grand Canyon Duals in Phoenix, Ariz. They wrestled four duals against three ranked opponents and the #1 ranked club team in the country. Below is a short recap of the duals.

#1 Newberry College 25, #18 Colorado Mesa 18

The Mavericks took on the nation's #1 team in Newberry College (S.C.) and fell just short losing the dual 25-18. The Mavericks had a number of stellar matches but the best was by 174 pounder Zak Slotten as he defeated 6th ranked Travis Sheehy 5-4.

Jon Gappmaier at 157 pounds and Tyler Nelson at 133 pounds scored wins by fall and Jordan Passehl scored a win at 197 pounds for Colorado Mesa's 18 team points.

#3 St. Cloud State 33, #18 Colorado Mesa 6

Colorado Mesa ran into one of the toughest teams in the country in #3 St. Cloud State (Minn.) and lost 33-6. 133 pounder Tyler Nelson and 141 pounder James Martinez picked up the two wins for the Mavericks. Nelson is now 2-0 on the day.

#8 Mercyhurst 28, #18 Colorado Mesa 9

The Mavericks faced off with there third consecutive ranked opponent on the day, this time 8th ranked Mercyhurst (Pa.) The Mavericks fell 28-9 but James Martinez and Jordan Passehl both picked up wins and improved to 2-1 on the day.

Martinez scored a fall over Levi Smeltzer at 141 pounds and Passehl an 8-4 decision over Seth Stonis.

Cal Baptist 27, #18 Colorado Mesa 15

Colorado Mesa wrestled their final dual of the day against the top ranked team from the NCWA. The Mavericks fell 27-15 but won four of the ten bouts in the dual.

James Martinez picked up a win at 141 pounds and finished 3-1 on the day.

Zak Slotten picked up his second win of the day with a 3-1 decision over Preston Brown.

Dylan Granard and Nick Petersen picked up their first wins of the day. Granard picked up a 4-3 decision over Bronson Gerl while Petersen pinned his opponent in 3:44.

Results

Colorado Mesa will spend New Year's down in Arizona as they are scheduled for a double dual on January 2 against Embry Riddle and #5 Grand Canyon. Those duals are scheduled to begin at 5:00pm
