Mavericks Topple #14 Roadrunners in Overtime

            The Colorado Mesa University men's soccer team did something Sunday it hadn't done in the program's histroy, beat the Metro State Roadrunners. The Mavericks defeated the 14th ranked Roadrunners 2-1 in overtime at Auraria Field in Denver. It was the 11th meeting between the two teams with Metro State either winning or having tied the previous 10 meetings. The win improved the Mavericks record to 3-9-1 on the season and 3-6-0 in RMAC matches while Metro State dropped to 7-4-1 and 5-3-0 in the RMAC.
            The Roadrunners got on the board early in the 1st half. Metro State's Scott Grode scored his 10th goal of the season in the 7th minute of the match and gave the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.
            Colorado Mesa evened the score in the 39th minute of the match on a penalty kick. Senior Danny Molineaux took the penalty kick and converted  for his 4th goal of the season. It was the first penalty kick the Mavericks had taken on the season while their opponents have attempted 4, converting all of them.
            The two teams played to a scoreless 2nd half and so they headed to overtime.
            At the 1:29 mark of the 1st overtime, the Mavericks scored the golden goal. AJ Marquez put back a deflected corner kick to give the Mavericks the victory over the 14th ranked Roadrunners. Marquez' goal was assisted by Jeremy Gwerder and was his first of the season.
            Micah Conrads picked up the win in goal. On the match, Conrads faced 16 total shots and made 6 saves.
            The Mavericks will return home for a Wednesday tilt with nationally ranked Fort Lewis. Kickoff is set for 7:00pm at Walker Field.
