Mavericks Gain Momentum Heading to Playoffs

          The Mesa State Mavericks gained momentum over the weekend heading into the RMAC Tournament. Mesa State defeated the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves 2-0 on Friday before defeating nationally ranked Regis 2-1 yesterday. Mesa State finished the regular season 10-6-2 and 6-6-2 in the RMAC.

          In Friday's match, Junior Danny Molineaux (West Sussex, England) scored in the 6th minute and the Mavericks never looked back. Molineaux took a pass from Senior Nathan Poirier (Grand Junction, Colo.) and headed it into the top left corner of the goal for his third goal of the season.

          Mesa State added an insurance goal late in the first half to secure the win, 2-0. Senior Reese Kegans (Claremont, Calif.) scored his fourth goal of the season in the 31st minute. Kegans took a pass from Marco Escobar (Edwards, Colo.) and beat the goalkeeper for an open shot. Escobar and Brandon Burton (Las Cruces, N.M.) were both credited with assists.

          Senior Goalkeeper Chris Raines (Aurora, Colo.) collected his fifth shutout of the season in the win. Raines made five saves in the match.

          In yesterday's regular season finale, Mesa State defeated nationally ranked #9 Regis 2-1. Mesa State's Bashiru Ali (Tempe, Ariz) got the scoring going in the 53rd minute. Ali received a deflected ball and took a shot which found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.

          A little less than 10 minutes later, Regis got the equalizer. Nathan Kafer was fouled inside the box and received a penalty kick which he converted. At the 62 minute mark, the score was tied at one a piece.

          Senior Steve Shaw (Albuquerque, N.M.)would score the game winning goal a minute and forty-four seconds later. Shaw dribbled up the field and found the top right corner of the goal to seal the win for the Mavericks. The goal was Shaw's team leading fifth of the season.

          With the two wins, the Mavericks gained the fifth seed in the RMAC Tournament and will match up with fourth seeded Metro State. The match will be Wednesday at 2:30pm at Auraria Field in Denver.
