The Mesa State Men's Soccer team played a crucial Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match on Sunday afternoon. A win would put them seven points ahead of the UCCS Mountain Lions. Mesa State got the win they needed beating the ThunderWolves 2-1. Mesa State improved to 7-6-2 and 3-6-2 in the RMAC, while CSU-Pueblo fell to 7-8-0, 6-5-0 in RMAC play.
Mesa State struck early in the first half with a goal in the 11th minute from Junior
Danny Molineaux (West Sussex, England). Molineaux took a pass from Senior
Nathan Poirier (Grand Junction, Colo.) and found the left side of the goal for his second goal of the season.
The Mavericks would tack onto their lead in the 39th minute on a
Stan Schrock (Okinawa, Japan) goal. Schrock took a pass from Senior
Steve Shaw (Albuquerque, N.M.), who took a feed from Freshman
Marco Escobar (Edwards, Colo.), and found the right side of the net.
At the end of the first half, Mesa State led 2-0.
In the 61st minute, CSU-Pueblo would answer back with a Robert Kinsey goal. ThunderWolf Sean Fitzgerald took a shot which bounced off the crossbar right to Kinsey which found the left side of the net. The goal was Kinsey's eighth of the season.
Mesa State would hold off a late furry from CSU-Pueblo but managed to hold them off and win 2-1.
Mesa State will be back at home next Friday to take on UCCS. Game starts at 7:00pm at Walker Field and will be the final home game of the season for the Maverick Soccer Team.
