Mesa State (4-7-1, 3-5-1 RMAC) fell to San Francisco State (8-5-0, 3-1-0 RMAC) in its final home dual match of the season 27-9 to visiting San Francisco State Sunday afternoon at Brownson Arena. The visiting Gators were ranked in the top 20 earlier in the season and last week were receiving votes, just under the radar of the top 20. MSC posted three victories and dropped several close matches in the final period of action.
The match started at the 174 weight class and MSC's Kyle Brightman got the Mavs off to a great start with a 9-5 decision. Brightman recorded three takedowns in the first period on his way to his eighth victory of the year. Andy Laiminger (184#) extended the Mavericks team lead to 6-0 with a convincing 9-3 decision over the Gators Marques Gales. Laiminger posted a takedown and near fall in period one and three and awarded one riding point in the match.
The Gators went on a six match streak winning four matches by three or less points. Following a decision at 197 pounds in which MSC's Luke Laurita wrestled up a weight class, and with a pin of heavyweight Dwayne Bacon, the Gators took a 9-6 lead. Laurita's dropped the match 16-12, nearly pulling off the win with an escape, takedown and near fall in period three.
At 125 pounds Miguel Baltazar fell 12-10 in a back-and-forth battle after Baltazar fell behind 7-0 after the first period. SFSU's Pierre Bondoc held on for the victory overcoming four takedowns in the final two periods.
Rhett Breed's (133#) match looked to be headed to overtime when Breed scored a takedown to tie the match at 10, only to have SFSU's Naveed Bagheri escape for a one point win (11-10).
Jason Wenger's rally at 141 pounds fell one point short, (12-11), despite two escapes and one takedown in the third period. At 149 pounds Chris Holzworth dropped a 12-9 decision, staging a comeback in the third period. SFSU's Joaquin Carlos led 8-2 entering the final period when Holzworth scored 7 points.
Nationally ranked (#3) Chase Walker gained some momentum back with an 8-1 decision over Markham Bertron at 157 pound weight class. Walker scored 3 points in each of the first two periods and was awarded a point (opponent stall) and one riding point to close out the match. MSC was forced to forfeit at 165 pounds.
Mesa State will wrap up regular season action Thursday night at Chadron State.
