Mesa State men's soccer hosted non-conference opponents Westminster (Utah) and Eastern New Mexico in a rare weekend off from RMAC action.
Friday night the Mavericks beat the Griffins 3-1 behind goals by Andy Cornia RFr, F, 5'10, Ogden, UT), Marco Angelo (Fr., MF, 5'8, Sandy, UT) and George Hunt (MF, 5'11, Evergreen, CO). MSC held a 1-0 halftime lead on Cornia's goal on a pass from Eric Anderson (Sr., F, 5'10, North Logan, Utah) at the 22:22 mark. Westminster tied the game on an unassisted goal by Mark Stoker at 55:32. The game remained tied until Angelo took a pass from Sam Dixon (So., MF, 5'11, Missoula, MT) and found the back of the net for a 2-1 lead. Sophomore George Hunt scored his first goal of the year on a pass from Mitchell Reid (So., DEF, 5'6, Arvada, CO) to ensure the Mavs victory. Goalkeeper Josh Tinaglia (Jr., 6'2, Littleton, CO) picked up victory number seven recording six saves on the day.
Sunday afternoon the Mavericks faced Eastern New Mexico (3-3-2). After being shutout 2-0 by CSU-Pueblo Friday afternoon, the Greyhounds answered with five goals against the Mavericks for a 5-1 victory.
ENMU held a 2-0 in the first period before Angelo but the lead in half with a penalty kick with under ten minutes remaining if the first half. It would be the only goal MSC scored all day. ENMU scored three unanswered goals in the second period to hand the Mavericks their worst defeat this season.
The Greyhounds out shot MSC 19-12 and tallied 22 fouls to MSC's, eight.
Tinaglia recorded six saves in the game.
MSC will return to RMAC action on the road this Friday and Sunday in Denver. The Mavs will play at Metro State on Friday and Regis on Sunday. Both games are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
