COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.— The Colorado Mesa University triathlon team and six of its members were recognized by the Collegiate Triathlon Coaches Association, which has announced its academic awards for the recently completed 2021 season.
The Mavericks were named as a CTCA Scholar All-America Team for the second straight year while
Shannon Feran,
Paloma Suarez Davila and
Abigail White were all named as Division II Scholar All-Americans.
Megan Buchanan,
Natalie Mitchell and
Emma Polenske were also recognized with Scholar All-American Honorable Mention plaudits.
As a team, the Mavericks had a 3.47 GPA in the 2021 fall semester, well above the 3.2 or higher requirement to receive the team honor, something they had also received in 2020.
To qualify for the individual awards, athletes must have had a 3.5 or higher GPA during the semester. To receive the first team plaudit, student-athletes must have also finished amongst the top 20 at the national championships. Honorable mention status was given to others who competed at the national championships, but finished outside the top 20.
Under the direction of head coach
Kinsey Laine, the Mavericks finished fourth in the Women's Collegiate Triathlon Championships in Tempe, Arizona. Feran finished eighth while White finished 17
th, one place ahead of Suarez, a freshman.
Buchanan, Feran, Mitchell, Polenske and White were all recognized as CTCA Scholar All-Americans in 2020-21. White also received the honor in 2019.
Although their championship season was completed in November, the Mavericks will compete one more time this academic year, competing at the Clermont Draft Legal Challenge in Clermont, Florida on Mar. 6.
