Colorado Mesa University Men's Basketball Coach
Andy Shantz announced the signing of five student-athletes that will compete in the 2013-14 season. The group consists of three guards and two forwards and all are coming in from out-of-state.
Derek Biale, the lone incoming freshman, is coming in from Redondo Union High School in Redondo Beach, CA. Biale was the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Southern Section 2A Player of the Year along with being named a Division II All-State selection and the Bay League Player of the Year. The 6-1 guard averaged 13 points, 2.6 assists and 2.1 steals per game in his senior season.
Jerry Duckworth from Seattle, WA played the last two seasons at Cochise College in Douglas, AZ. In Duckworth's two seasons at Cochise, He won 50 games and won the ACCAC Championship during the 2011-12 season. The 6-0 guard made 101 three point baskets and averaged 12.5 points per game, earning him All-Region Honorable Mention. He earned the Academic Award at Cochise. Jerry graduated High School from Federal Way High School.
Cabrillo College standout
Dalton Noble will transfer to CMU after winning back-to-back Coast Conference South Championships. The Salt Lake City native led the team in scoring with 17 points per game. The 6-1 guard graduated from Kearns High School.
Jon Orr, a 6-7 forward, will transfer in from Eastern Arizona College. The Thatcher, AZ native, was named an ACCAC All-Conference selection after averaging 12.6 points and 9.3 rebounds a game for the Gila Monsters. He helped lead the team to a 20-10 record a year ago.
Carlos Perez will come in from Arizona Western College. Perez, a 6-7 forward, started all 31 games a year ago for the Matadors and earned All-ACCAC Honorable Mention honors. The native of Chula Vista, CA averaged 9.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game and earned 51 wins in his two year career.
The Mavericks will open the season November 8 at the Dixie State University Classic in St. George against Pac-West foe Cal Baptist.
