Colorado Mesa women's basketball improved to 2-0 under first year head coach Taylor Wagner, running past Montana State Billings on Saturday afternoon at the Dixie State Tip-Off in St. George, Utah.
The Mavericks used an 11-0 run at the 13:52 mark in the first half to take a 17-11 lead and never trailed again in the contest. The Yellow Jackets led 11-6 and in a span of four minutes turned the ball over five times. MSUB closed the gap to four points (24-20) with 6:14 remaining in the first half before CMU's 7-0 spurt pushed the lead to double digits (31-20). CMU would take a 38-29 halftime lead behind Kelsey Sigl's eight points. Katrina Selsor, Sharaya Selsor and Bruna Deichmann combined for 18 first half points.
CMU shut down the Yellow Jackets in the second half allowing their opponent only 18-second half points outscoring Montana State Billings 31-18 in the final 20 minutes.
Kelsey Sigl led all players with 17 points hitting 7 of 10 from the field. Sigl added nine rebounds and three assists. Bruna Deichmann finished with 12 points, two assists and two rebounds. Christen Lopez recorded eight points and Taylor Rock finished with seven points and six rebounds. Katrina Selsor pulled down a game high 12 rebounds, and finished with six points and four assists.
CMU shot 49 percent for the field (24-49) and out-rebounded the Yellow Jackets 41-25. The Mavericks were 16 of 18 from the foul line and 5 of 18 from the 3-point line.
Montana State Billings shot 29.4 percent (15-51) from the field and 3 of 14 from beyond the arc. The two teams combined for 45 turnovers (CMU-25) and 16 steals.
CMU returns to Brownson Arena for its home debut in the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday at 5 p.m. The Mavericks will open on Friday against Hillsdale College. On Saturday CMU will play Mid-America Christian University.
