CMU Drops Overtime Game at Sonoma State

Colorado Mesa dropped its second game in as many nights, falling in overtime 55-54 at Sonoma State University on Saturday night. The game was the Seawolves season opener.

Sonoma State tied the game at the buzzer in regulation and scored the go-ahead basket in overtime with 51 seconds remaining. SSU's Travis Newman finished with a team high 16 points, scoring the tying basket in regulation and the 3-point bucket in OT, clinching the victory. CMU had a three point lead in overtime, a 54-51 lead at 3:20. The Mavs would not score again as the Seawolves notched the final four points. CMU's five OT points were all free throws.

Kelsey Sigl led all players with 28 points hitting 9 of 13 from the field, including 3 of 4 from the 3-point line. She had four rebounds and four assists in the overtime loss. Hillary Duncan recorded nine points and four rebounds.

 The Mavericks took the lead with 12:31 in the second half and lead by as many as nine points with 5:44 (46-37) remaining. Sonoma State would out score CMU 12-3 the remainder of the second half, scoring the tying basket as time expired.  

In the first half Sonoma State scored the first two points of the contest and the Mavs went on a 5-0 run and never trailed again n the first half. The Seawolves tied the game at 18-18 with 3:11 remaining in the half. CMU closed out the first half with a 6-2 run and a 24-20 halftime lead.

In the first half Sigl and Duncan each had seven first-half points. The two teams combined for 25 turnovers in the first 20 minutes of play. CMU was 4 of 8 from behind the arc.

CMU shot 45 percent (18-40) and 61 percent (11-18) from the foul line. CMU was narrowly out-rebounded by the taller Seawolves 33-31. The Mavs had 29 turnovers in the game and Sonoma had 24. SSU shot 33 percent (19-58) from the field and 92 percent from the foul line (12-13).

CMU will return home to host the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic November 25-26 at Brownson Arena. The Mavs will play Tarleton State and Oklahoma Panhandle in the two day event. Both games are set to Tip-off at 5 pm.
