GREENSBORO, N.C.— Thanks to two diving finalists and two school-record setting times in the same race, the Colorado Mesa University women's swimming and diving team had all six members in action on Friday earn all-America honors on Day 3 of the NCAA Division II National Championships here at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
Â
Brittany Dixon placed fourth in the 1-meter diving event with 441.90 points while
Kelsey Vreeman took eighth with 390.00 points. Dixon's effort matched Vreeman's 3-meter placing on Wednesday and the two sophomores now share the distinction of being the highest finishing women's divers in CMU's national meet history.
Â
Dixon, who moved up from seventh place after the preliminary round also earned her second first team all-America honor of the week after placing seventh on the 3-meter board.
Â
Vreeman is now a 3-time first team and 4-time overall all-American performer. She also substantially improved upon her 15
th place finish in the event from last year.
Â
Meanwhile, the youthful 800 free relay team of
Sierra Forbord,
Maddie Pressler,
Kennedy Bright and
Maddie McClain won their morning session heat in 7:26.36 to smash the former Maverick record of 7:30.15, which the same quartet had posted at last month's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships.
Â
Forbord swam the opening leg in 1:50.49 on Friday and significantly bettered the 200 free altitude adjusted school record of 1:50.98, which had been held by Briana Purkapile since the 2014 RMAC Championships.
Â
The Mavericks were in first place after the morning session and finished ninth as each of top eight seeded teams swam faster to close out the women's portion of the evening finals session.
Â
The ninth place finish is the Mavericks' highest relay placing in men's or women's school history.
Â
It also allowed each member to second team all-America status for the first time in their respective careers. McClain, a sophomore, is the veteran of the group after helping the Mavericks to a 28
th place finish in the event at last year's national meet. The other three are freshman.
Â
With 18 points from the relay and 26 combined points from Dixon and Vreeman, the Maverick women have already set a new program record for national championship points. They already have 71 points after finishing a program-best 22
nd with 55 points last year. Â
Â
CMU is currently in 15
th place in the team standings heading into the fourth and final day of the meet, which will feature Forbord in the 100 free, her best individual event, and the meet-capping 400 free relay.
Â
Meanwhile, the Maverick men's best effort of Friday came from
Josh Bedford, who earned his fourth second team all-America certificate of the meet by placing 13th in the 100 breaststroke. He posted a time of 54.56 seconds in the consolation final after qualifying 16
th in 54.71.
Â
Meanwhile, the 800 free relay squad of Bedford,
Sam Bryant,
Torsten Rau and
Sky Hirsch finished 17
th with a time of 6:42.97. They were in ninth place after the morning session but slid just outside of the point-scoring places after the top eight teams each went faster in the evening.
Â
In earlier action during the morning preliminary session, Bryant finished 22
nd in the 500 free with a time of 4:31.52 while Rau touched in 4:34.10 to take 32
nd.
Â
The Maverick men are in 20
th place with 61 team points but still have a good shot to better their best ever finish of 17
th, turned in last year, as both Bryant and Rau will swim the 1,650 free while
Ammar Hassan, the 1-meter national champion from Thursday,
Sage D'Ambrosia and
Noah Macomber will all compete in 3-meter diving event. Rau is also entered in the 200 back.
Â
The Mavericks scored a program-record 103 points last year.
Saturday's action begins at 10 a.m. EDT with the swimming preliminaries. The diving prelims will begin at 2 p.m. EDT while the final session of the meet commence at 6 p.m. EDT.
