GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.— Colorado Mesa University's domination of the A3 Performance/CMU Invite swimming and diving meet continued on Friday at the El Pomar Natatorium as the Maverick men's and women's teams set seven more meet records and combined for 11 event wins while extending their massive team leads after the second of the 3-day meet.
Â
The Maverick men won all but one of the nine contested events throughout the day and set a whopping 11 NCAA Division II Championship provisional qualifying times in the swimming events. The Mavericks also had four men reach the qualifying standard in the 1-meter diving event as
Noah Macomber and
Sage D'Ambrosia took turns as the school and meet record holders.
Â
Sam Bryant, who eclipsed two,
Morgan Bean and
Chris Radomski also set meet records in the swimming events throughout the day as the Mavericks have already scored 1,165 points to easily out-pace the Colorado School of Mines (584) and the CMU Club Team (123).
Â
Meanwhile, the Maverick women claimed three event wins throughout the evening and set seven NCAA provisional qualifying times in the pool while
Kelsey Vreeman and
Brittany Dixon surpassed the national qualifying standard on the 3-meter diving board. Vreeman also broke the school, meet and pool records.
Â
The Maverick women have scored 1,032 points, more than double of Mines, currently in second amongst the eight women's teams with 498.
Â
Vreeman tallied 509.25 points in the preliminaries to easily surpass the former CMU school record and meet record of 459.95 points set by Cassie Blakeman last year. Vreeman also tallied 300.10 points in her six optional dives of the preliminary round to easily surpass the 5-year old school record of 281.55, which had been set by Amanda Jennings.
Â
Vreeman's 11-dive score also broke the pool record of 490.10, which had been set in 2013 by Kali Lents of Incarnate Word. In the finals, she tallied 499.90 points while Dixon finished second with 466.70 points to also better the former meet and school records.
Â
While all of that was going on, Macomber and D'Ambrosia had an intra-squad battle of their own. Macomber won the preliminaries with 539.40 points to break both the school and meet records before D'Ambrosia came back in the finals to tally 550.05 points as Macomber finished second with 540.55.
Â
Ross Barringer also finished third with a NCAA qualifying score of 446.15 points in the finals while
Sabin Venable tallied 446.20 points in the preliminary round to book his trip to Greensboro, N.C. in March.
Â
In the swimming events, Bryant was the brightest star of the day as he broke the meet record in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:59.39. He did not swim that event in the evening final session as
Nico Tscherner won the event in 4:02.41 to also record a NCAA provisional qualifying time.
Â
Bryant did swim the 1,000 free in the evening and won that event in a meet record and NCAA "B" cut time of 9:28.16.Â
Torsten Rau (9:31.10) and
Jacob Dexter (9:36.67) finished second and third, respectively, with provisional qualifying times.
Â
Meanwhile, the meet record in the 100 butterfly changed hands twice as
Morgan Bean clocked a time of 48.85 seconds in the preliminaries before
Chris Radomski went even quicker (48.77) to claim the finals win ahead of Bean (48.93) and
Sky Hirsch (49.16), who also set NCAA "B" cut times.
Â
The Mavericks also had three national consideration times in the 200 free as
Jerry Veneris won the final in 1:41.09 after
Landon Ellis (1:40.89) and
Jake Gremaud (1:41.49) had set qualifying marks in the preliminaries.
Â
Grace Payton was a double-qualifier throughout the day as she set a time of 4:34.79 in the 400 IM preliminaries before clocking a winning and NCAA "B" cut mark of 56.80 in the 100 backstroke during the finals.
Â
Danielle Jefferies (56.00, 100 fly),
Maddie Pressler (1:53.43, 200 free),
Sierra Forbord (1:54.20, 200 free) and
Kennedy Bright (1:54.07, 200 free) also registered NCAA "B" cut times.
Â
The Mavericks also swept the 200 medley relay wins, won the men's 800 free relay and got an individual win from Hirsch in the 100 back.
Â
Saturday's action will begin with a 10 a.m. preliminary and diving exhibition session before the final session will begin at 4 p.m.
